Curriculum Principles

Flexibility for Individual Pacing

While the curriculum is structured around sessions and themes, individual progress through topics and mastery of skills is personalized. Montessori-inspired work cycles and prepared environments, individual and group projects, and teacher-guided instruction facilitate this.

Subject Integration &
Real-World Connections

Unit studies are designed to cross traditional subject boundaries, encouraging students to apply skills and knowledge in interdisciplinary projects. Whenever possible, projects include a real-world connection, making learning more relevant and helping students see how their work connects to the world around them.

Assessment for Mastery

Regular, formative assessments are embedded in daily activities, with summative assessments at the end of each session to ensure mastery before moving on. These assessments can include project presentations, portfolios, and skill demonstrations.

Academic & Applied Learning

Core Skill Blocks

Work Blocks are subject-based, open work periods that blend structure and self-paced work. During these times, students receive small-group or individual lessons from subject-area leads while working independently and at their own pace. For example, in a math work cycle, students might receive a targeted lesson, then engage in follow-up work, small-group practice, or one-on-one conferences. This structure combines the best of Montessori and traditional approaches, promoting deeper engagement, self-direction, and personalized learning in every subject area.

Project Blocks

Project Blocks are dedicated work periods for active, hands-on work and extended inquiry. These periods prioritize real-world application through projects, experiments, and fieldwork—connecting learning to their environment and lived experiences. Students deepen their understanding through doing, creating, and collaborating.

Innovation & Design Lab

The Innovation and Design Lab takes place in our dedicated Maker Space—a creative environment designed for hands-on exploration and problem-solving. Here, students engage in engineering, systems thinking, design challenges, and prototyping. This space encourages experimentation, collaboration, and iterative thinking as students apply their knowledge to real-world problems through the design process.

L.E.A.Ds

L.E.A.Ds are hands-on learning experiences categorized as Labs, Experiments, Activities, or Demonstrations. They offer concrete application of academic concepts, allowing students to learn through direct engagement, observation, and practice. Whether testing a hypothesis or building a model, L.E.A.Ds encourage exploration, curiosity, and deeper understanding through doing.
